Helfer is a native of the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada, to Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer. The two are of German, English, Swedish and Norwegian heritage. She went to William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler. She had three sisters. Tammy, Tara, and Trena as well as her worked on the family farm. Helfer was found at the age of 17 by a scout from a modeling agency when she was waiting in line at an movie theater.
